Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay Resort Partners with Chesapeake Oyster Recovery in Celebration of Hyatt Thrive, a Global Volunteer Initiative

CAMBRIDGE, Md – (July 13, 2012) – In support of Hyatt Thrive, Hyatt’s global corporate responsibility platform, Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay is giving back to the community through its partnership with The Chesapeake Oyster Recovery, an innovative recycling program with a mission of restoring oyster populations within the Chesapeake Bay. Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay associates are collecting empty oyster shells and sending clean shells to oyster hatcheries – joining Hyatt colleagues around the world in a month-long effort to give back to their local communities. Recently, the hotel team began collecting hundreds of pounds of empty shells a week at its seafood specialty restaurant, Blue Point Provision Company. “We are dedicated to the Dorchester county community and our team is honored to be a part of Hyatt’s Global Volunteer Initiative, working with The Chesapeake Oyster Recovery,” Ted Kanatas, general manager, Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay. “We’re highlighting this effort during Hyatt Thrive, but our commitment to this vital organization is an ongoing initiative.”

Shells collected at Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay are cleaned and refrigerated before being transported to the The Horn Point Lab Oyster Hatchery. Located at the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science near Cambridge, The Horn Point Lab, one of the largest oyster hatcheries on the East Coast, is restoring the oyster population by using an innovative system that collects oysters and produces spawning. Hyatt’s Global Volunteer Initiative is a brand-wide effort that encourages Hyatt associates to improve the many communities around the world that they call home. Hyatt Thrive empowers over 90,000 associates at more than 480 properties around the world to help communities do one thing – Thrive – by focusing on four areas: environmental sustainability; economic development and investment; education and personal advancement; and health and wellness.
